On Monday, the Election Commission issued orders to remove six Home Secretaries, including top bureaucrats from Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission has also ordered the transfer of the Director-General of Police in West Bengal. This state has witnessed multiple incidents of violence during elections in the past few years.
It is not uncommon for the Election Commission to carry out a reshuffle of officials before major polls. The recent re-shuffle involved the transfer of several officials including the Home Secretaries of Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, as well as senior officials attached to the offices of the Chief Ministers of Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh.
In addition, Iqbal Singh Chahal, Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and other officials in municipalities across Maharashtra have been removed too.
The move comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls which will be held in seven phases from April 19, and the results will be announced on June 4. With this, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect. The Election Commission made this announcement on Friday.
